Good evening everyone. I am delighted to be invited to say a few words to officially launch the Malay language micro-site for Unlocking ADHD.
2. ADHD is a neuro-developmental condition that affects about 5% of young children locally. Most ADHD symptoms start in early childhood or when one is young, although ADHD can affect persons of all ages. Resources and support for persons with ADHD and their families are typically provided by various domains including the education, social and healthcare services. While there are some resources available on this condition in Singapore, most of them are in English. There have been limited information and resources on ADHD available in the Malay language so far.
3. The impetus for this initiative was from the feedback of the ADHD community, especially the adult ADHDers. Many of them experienced challenges trying to explain ADHD to their families and friends, especially those who are more comfortable speaking in their mother tongue. There are limited materials to help them understand what ADHD symptoms are, how to manage the condition, and how to better support loved ones who have been diagnosed with ADHD.
4. I would like to congratulate the Unlocking ADHD volunteers who have worked hard on this translation project for the past few months. I hope that the resources on the micro-site will benefit the Malay community.
5. I also wish you a successful launch event with your panel discussion and stories of experiences by friends within the Malay community who have live with ADHD. May this be the start of important conversations and greater understanding and support among family members, friends and loved ones for those with ADHD.
6. Thank you.
